# How does BMI work

**BMI** (Body Mass Index) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. BMI is a key Vital and with Clinicea you get the BMI calculated automatically and this can be tracked as well. Let us see how you can do it.

**Pre-requisite**  
You need to have first created in Tools | Clinical Items | an item which is _Named_ “**BMI_“_**, where _Clinical Section_ is set to **“Vital”**, and _Datatype_ is set to **“Numeric “.**

1.  Go to **Patient** | Select **Patient** and open the Patient Medical Chart | Go to the Clinical section- **Vitals**. Click on the + icon to Add **BMI** to the Vitals section of the casesheet.
    
2.  Enter Height and Weight- **BMI** will get calculated automatically.
